Business Person of the Week- Phuti Mahanyele

Phuti Mahanyele is an accomplished businesswoman of South African descent. She is the CEO of Naspers South Africa and is also Executive Chairman of Sigma Capital. Phuti is an experienced CEO with a consistent history and experience in management, leadership and business development.

After graduating from Mc Auley House Convent, she left Johannesburg at the age of 17 to study Economics at Rutgers University in 1989. She holds a Masters in Business Administration from De Montfort University and is an alumnus of Harvard University.
Her career started as Management Trainee at National Sorghum Breweries in 1993 then she became Manager of Irvin and Johnson in 1995. Phuti was once an Account Manager at The Agency, Vice President at Fieldstone Private Capital Group Inc. New York, Manager at Development Bank of Southern Africa and CEO of Shanduka Group (now part of Pembani Group).

Having achieved a lot in her career, Phuti leads several companies and serves on several executive boards. She serves as Chairperson of Gigajoule Africa Limited and Non-Executive Director at Netgroup Solutions. She is the Director at Realeka Marketing, DPJ Marketing, Shanduka Share Scheme, Pangolin Business Women Enterprises and Wethu Communications.

Phuti has been awarded and recognized severally for her business prowess. Some of these include the World Economic Forum 2007 – Global Young Leader, Most Influential Woman in Government and Business 2009, Leading Africa Woman in Business 2012, Forbes Woman Africa Business Woman of 2014, amongst others.  Worthy of mention, Phuti was listed in the Wall Street Journal’s list of ‘Top 50 Women in the World to watch in 2008’. Our distinguished business person for the week is the only black woman to run one of the top 40 companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
