Business Personality of the Week- Sudhir Ruparelia

Sudhir Ruparelia is a Ugandan Business Magnate, Serial Investor and the Chairman of the Ruparelia Group of Companies.

The business magnate was born into an Indian Gujarati family in January 1985 in the western region of Uganda called Kabatoro. His grandparents were Indians who migrated to Uganda and settled in the country.

Sudhir began his primary education at the Bat Valley Primary School Kampala and later proceed to Jinja Main street primary school. He proceeded to Kololo Senior Secondary School Kampala for his secondary education.

Ruparelia and his parents moved to the United Kingdom at the age of 16 due to political unrest and the expulsion of Asians from Uganda in 1972. While in the UK, Ruparelia did every menial job that comes his way. He also cultivated the habit of saving for the future.

It was this saving of $25,000 that he used in starting his first business-the sales of beers and spirit and salt when he returned to Uganda in 1985.

The ban on beer importation in 1989 by the Uganda government made this serial entrepreneur seek for a new business opportunity. He ventured into the Forex business by creating Crane forex bureau, a company that grew into Crane Bank in 1995.

Right from 1995 until now, Ruparelia has expanded his business to new ground.

As of 2017, the serialprenuer’s company Ruparelia Group has grown to have 16 subsidiaries companies. These companies offer banking, insurance, education, broadcasting, real estate, floriculture, hotels, and resort services. He also acquired Victoria University Kampala in 2013 to join the fleet of companies.

Sudhir Ruparelia was listed as the 27th richest man in Africa and the 1638 billionaire in 2015 by Forbes. He is also the richest man in Uganda according to Forbes 2019 ranking with a net worth is $1.2 billion.
