Virgin hyperloop Dubai

With Dubai’s DP World as a major shareholder in the project, the company Group Chairman and CEO, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem in his remarks noted that “We are one step closer to ushering in a new era of ultra-fast, sustainable movement of people and goods.”

This invention paves the way for the future of mass transportation around the world and most especially, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the GCC region.

Virgin hyperloop Dubai

An ultrafast transportation system is the promise of the Virgin Hyperloop, giving better chances to the possibility for commercial space travel and faster air transportation across various locations around the world.

Founded in 2014, this innovation draws from bringing to reality, the vision for “a futuristic transportation system of magnetically levitating pods traveling through nearly airless tubes at speeds of up to 760 mph (1,223 km/h)”.

The test vehicle was designed by Bjarke Ingels with a capacity for two passengers to prove the passenger ability for safe travel through the hyperloop environment with the necessary subsystem that will not require passengers to travel within the vacuum using a spacesuit.

Future vehicle designs will be different and have the capacity to accommodate up to 28 passengers.

In this week’s news, Bill Gates is named the world’s richest man yet again for the 4^th year in a row by Forbes Magazine. This is also the 18^th time that Mr. Gates receives this title. The number of billionaires on the planet has increased from 1,810 people last year to 2,043 this year, the biggest increase in 31 years according to Forbes.

While Mr. Gates had a good year, increasing his wealth by 9 million, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos had the best year of any man in the planet, amassing an additional wealth of 27.6 billion US dollars. This moved Mr. Bezos up two places, into the top three for the first time. Coming in second was Warren Buffet, having the second-largest gain in wealth also. Mr. Buffet takes this position back from the founder of Zara, Amancio Ortega. Mr. Ortega has also moved down to the fourth place.

I’m sure you were wondering where Mark Zuckerberg was in all this name mentioning? The founder of Facebook came in fifth this year with an increase of 11.4 billion USD pushing Mexico’s richest man, Carlos Slim Helu to sixth place. The rest of the top ten in order are Larry Ellison, brothers Charles and David Koch and Michael Bloomberg.

This year two more people in their 20s have become self-made billionaires (the other two are the owners of Snapchat). 56 billionaires were under the age of 40, apparently, 10 from last year dropped below the 1-billion-dollar mark. The first week of March has been characterized by some interesting activity in the American stock market. This week the popular photo-sharing app, Snapchat’s parent company, Snap, went public. Though there was no surety how the market would respond to this IPO (initial public offering), it has been an interesting week for Snap. Last week Thursday Snap entered the New York Stock Exchange with a bang, valuated at 41% above its issue price of $17 a share at $24 per share. This would give Snap a market capitalization of roughly 20 billion dollars. In fact, it is rumored that other applications such as Uber, Airbnb, and China’s Xiaomi might follow their lead. So, what are the facts behind this huge IPO? What is going on in Ghostface’s (the name of the Snapchat icon) house? Let’s dig a little deeper.

Snapchat is an app probably most popular for its strange and creative filters including voice changing and face-swapping technology. Last year it reported having 158 million daily active users creating and sending on average 2.5 billion “snaps” in its integrated network daily. But, prior to its IPO, how did Snapchat fund itself? Actually, 98% of its funding was being made by paid advertising as of last year. So, though Snapchat was experiencing growing revenues, it was equally experiencing growing losses as well. Since such a high portion of Snapchat’s funding is reliant on paid advertising, it is paramount that the app is able to facilitate growth in daily active users as this will attract more advertisers (more traffic means more advertising which means more money). This notwithstanding, Snapchat also has the issue of customer “brand loyalty” because the majority of its customers are teens and this is a demographic that could easily switch over to a different platform. All of these challenges, the company faces added pressure as competition such as Instagram creates snap-like features (“Instagram Stories”) to boot them out.

Hence, with these factors in mind and the need to increase gross profit margin, Snap could be diversifying into other products on the market as well. Already, the company has unleashed a pair of goggles: the Snapchat video-camera glasses that record 10-second clips or “snaps” with the tap of a button and then allow you to post them on the snapchat app.

Whatever, be the case, it seems the market has a positive feeling about Snap and it will be interesting to see what the future of the company will be. Will Snapchat be able to grow its fan base to the size of Facebook’s? Will it be able to move past the hurdle that a similar social media company, Twitter, has reached after its IPO? Can Snap’s fortunes turn around and the company truly be profitable despite claims that they do not expect profitability? These are all things that could be interesting to find out in the near future.

After the unfortunate Galaxy Note 7 debaucle, android phone powerhouse, Samsung, might be making a comeback with its latest “S” model, which we suspect will be released on March 29^th of this year. Earlier this week, Samsung sent out invites for a special media event in New York. While many rumors are going around on the internet, these are the ones we are more sure about.

Samsung is set to release two new phones: the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 plus, the plus is likely to be a larger version of the former. The GS8 will have a 5.7-inch display and the GS8 plus will have a 7.2-inch display. After the Galaxy Note 7 issue, some are wondering if Samsung should keep the Galaxy name on its newer models. The “S” series and the “Note” series are essentially different phones though so it’s not sure that the continued use of the name will be met negatively by consumers.

Earlier this week, Samsung released two teaser trailer videos at the Mobile World Congress about the “Galaxy Unpacked Event” that indicate an innovative new design for the Galaxy phone. There is some likelihood that the models will be devoid of a home button and will instead have a touch version of the home button like that of the Google Pixel and the LG G6. Leaked photographs also indicate that it will be possible to toggle the position of the home button as the screen rotates.

The phones will come out with an individually tailored version of android 7.0, nougat, and will be supported by a Samsung-owned Artificial Intelligence (AI) replacement to the usual Google AI usually used in the phone. Last year Samsung acquired Viv Labs, an AI platform, that would make it possible for them to do so.

The last week of February 2017 has been a very interesting one. While the American and other stock markets are doing record-worthy well with the FTSE (Financial Times Stock Exchange) 100 hitting a new record high and the Dow Jones Industrial Average also hitting 21,000 for the first time ever, it’s a good time to be buying and trading in the stock market. But, these days stockbrokers aren’t the only brokers in the world; there are now “data brokers” as well, making tons of money by selling data, both public and personal as the data craze continues to grow in our “millennial age”. In contrast, however, one theme that seems to be resonating throughout this past week is reintroducing the old as a new thing.

The owner of Tesla, Elon Musk, plans to send two private individuals to the moon, making the first lunar mission with humans on board in 45 years. So does a car company have the technological expertise to send people, especially people who aren’t already trained astronauts, to the moon? Well, besides being the owner of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk is also the owner of a company called SpaceX that has developed a new rocket model called the Falcon Heavy. For the flight, SpaceX intends to use the Falcon Heavy rocket along with a Dragon 2 Capsule that will undergo testing this Summer. In the meantime, the individuals are undergoing serious physical and mental training to prepare them for the moon mission. Could this be the catapult that could lead to individuals living in space altogether?

Meanwhile, while Samsung busily drops hints of its new Galaxy S model, a company that we have relegated to the archives of phone-use history, Nokia, is introducing an improved version of its old 3310 model to the world. The original Nokia 3310 was a massive hit in 2000 preceding the smartphone hype that followed the release of the original iPhone. It sold 126 million units worldwide. This newer version has the original design of the old phone with a keypad and the quaint little screen. It also has all the old javascript games we originally fell in love with, Snake, Snake II, Space Impact and Bantumi. However, the user interface has advanced a little, offering better quality graphics, brighter color models and it’s also a bit lighter and a bit slimmer than the original headset. This is because the new 3310 is not running on javascript but is a Windows 8 phone. With so much hype for smartphones that have inbuilt AI technology and full touch technologies, will Nokia’s new 3310 model be able to bring back strength to the now Microsoft-owned Nokia handset division?

In other news, the hoe-gardening trend might be making a comeback as Swedish-owned furniture giant, Ikea has introduced a flat-pack indoor garden. The garden is actually a spherical, plywood-made, piece of furniture that can easily be assembled inside the house. Actual plants can be grown inside of the spherical invention. It is called a Growroom, and is meant to encourage home gardening but literally providing people with an indoor garden. This interesting invention was created by a company named SPACE10, a “future-living lab” that is an external innovation hub supported by Ikea.

According to founder of STEP, Mr. Ray Dargham, a person has three opportunities in life; his twenties, his thirties and his forties. This is but an example of the candid remarks that Ray made during yesterday’s Startup Grind, hosted by Google for Entrepreneurs, at in5 innovation center in Dubai.

Ray is an individual that, upon study of website content on traditional Arabic websites and media, noticed that there was a gap in engaging content and saw the opportunity to fill this gap. Thus he was led to set up the uprising media empire known as STEP.

Ray and STEP also host a yearly conference for entrepreneurs, startups and content producers known as STEP conference, the largest interactive gathering in MENA (the Middle East and North Africa). This year’s STEP conference will come off from April 5th to the 7th and will be hosted at the Dubai International Marine Club.

Throughout the program, Ray spoke of his personal experiences in setting up a team to accomplish the goal he wanted to achieve and a few of his personal insights with those that attended the program. STEP is mainly in the business of producing Arabic content for several different websites. Some of this content production is automated in that, a system processes which content is the most appropriate for which sites based on the region of the site’s reach, and the website’s purpose. One interesting thing he said was that he could not tell any business what challenges it should look for and what cases to avoid because each business is a unique case of its own with its own specific characteristics and challenges.

In the case of his business, he explained he wanted to add humorous content to websites. However, with each different type of Arabic dialect, there was a type of humor that was particular to it. So, in building a team, he had to find ppl to develop content for different dialects of Arabic as opposed to developing the same content across. Hence, he has teams of content producers for different regions.

My biggest takeaway from the conference was that there is no right formula for business. If you have a business idea and you would like to go head with it, you define your own rules and tactics based on the elements that you have to deal with. Every business and every business idea is its own individual identity. So, it is the job of the entrepreneur to help the world truly understand the identity of your business and its product or service. The next Google for Entrepreneurs Startup Grind in Dubai will be hosted in May at the same location.
